The short version

Brakkus has no accounts, no logins, no newsletter and no comment section, so there is very little for us to know about you. What exists is the technical record of your visit, an aggregate picture of which articles get read, and any email you have chosen to send us.

The longer version below sets out the detail, because “we care about your privacy” is not information and this page ought to contain some.

Who is responsible

This policy covers brakkus.com and the email addresses listed on our Contact page. The site is run by its operator, who is responsible for the processing described here and who can be reached at [email protected] for any question about it.

Sites you reach through a link from here are outside this policy. Their own terms and privacy policies govern what happens once you arrive.

Information collected automatically

Serving a web page produces a technical record whether anyone wants one or not, and ours is unremarkable. Our hosting and content delivery layer logs the IP address the request came from, the page requested, the referring URL if your browser sent one, the browser and operating system identified by the user-agent string, an approximate location inferred from the network address, and the time. Analytics tooling builds an aggregate view on top: which pages are read, roughly how long readers stay, what kind of device they use, and which paths they take through the site.

None of that is used to identify individual readers, and we do not attempt to link it to a name.

Information you send us

If you write to one of the addresses on the Contact page, we receive your email address, the message, and any detail you decided to include. Nothing more, and only what you sent.

This matters most for corrections and for people writing about their own work in the industry: we hold your message, we act on it, and we do not add you to anything.

What we do with it

• Serve the site, keep it fast, and find out why something broke
• Detect and block abusive traffic, bulk scraping and attempted intrusion
• Understand in aggregate which subjects readers want explained
• Serve and measure the advertising that pays for the site
• Reply to your email and, in the case of a correction, keep a record of what was changed

Personal information is not sold, rented, or disclosed to anyone other than the service providers set out below.

Cookies

Cookies are small files placed in your browser by this site or by a service embedded in it. Ours divide into three categories:

Strictly necessary. Required for the site to work and stay secure. These are not optional if you are using the site.

Analytics. Used to count and understand readership in aggregate.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and to other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet. Those vendors receive the technical request information described above; they do not receive your email address or anything you have written to us.

Personalised advertising from Google can be turned off in Google’s Ads Settings. Industry-wide opt-outs are at aboutads.info and, for European readers, Your Online Choices. These reduce relevance rather than remove advertising.

Processors and international transfers

We rely on external providers for hosting and content delivery, analytics, advertising delivery and measurement, and email. Each acts on our instructions and each is given access only to what its function requires.

Several of these providers are established outside the European Economic Area, so personal information may be transferred internationally. Where that happens it is done on the legal bases and with the safeguards such transfers require.

Retention

Technical logs are kept only for as long as they serve diagnostics and abuse prevention. Analytics data persists in aggregate. Email is kept while it is still relevant — correspondence recording a published correction is kept as part of that record — and is otherwise deleted.

Legal bases for processing

For readers in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom: delivering the site and keeping it secure rests on our legitimate interest in operating a functioning, non-abused publication. Replying to your email rests on our legitimate interest in corresponding with readers, or on performance of your request. Non-essential cookies, analytics and personalised advertising rest on your consent, which you may withdraw at any time.

Your rights

You may ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to erase it, to restrict or object to its use, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw any consent you have given. Readers in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom hold these rights under data protection law; readers in some other jurisdictions, California among them, hold comparable rights.

Send requests to [email protected]. We answer within the statutory deadline and in any event within one month. We may need to verify that the request is yours; writing from the address in question is the simplest way to settle that.

You are also entitled to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority. We would prefer the chance to put something right first, but that route belongs to you either way.

Children

Brakkus is a general-audience publication written for adults. It is not aimed at children, we do not knowingly collect information from them, and we do not knowingly permit advertising targeted at them. If you believe a child has sent us information, tell us at the privacy address and it will be deleted.

Updates

Changes to this policy are reflected in the date at the top. Anything material will be signposted on the site rather than slipped in.
